Cozy Cocktails to “Fall” in Love With

As summer fades into fall, we start craving all things cozy—scarves and sweaters replace shorts and sandals, and weekends are filled with trips to apple orchards and pumpkin patches. The season also invites us to enjoy cozy cocktails that capture the colors and flavors of autumn. Here are three of our favorites:

Apple Cider Mule

Apple Cider Mule

Apple picking typically marks the beginning of the harvest season, and it’s a fun tradition to share with family and friends. But the fun doesn’t have to end when the baskets are filled. Why not have everyone over for a post-picking cocktail party? This apple cider mule is as refreshing as it is cozy, and it’s sure to be a hit.

Ingredients
  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 3 oz apple cider
  • Ginger Beer
  • Ice
  • Apple slices and a cinnamon stick for garnish

In a copper mug or glass, combine the vodka, lime juice, and apple cider, and then fill the mug with ice. Top off the glass with ginger beer, and then gently stir to combine. Add a cinnamon stick and garnish the rim with a crisp apple slice.

  • Spicy substitution: Use bourbon or spiced rum instead of vodka to add a bit of warmth and depth to the drink.
  • Toasty touch: Add a sprinkle of chopped toasted pecans or walnuts to add a little nutty crunch.
  • Perfect pairing: Serve with a cheese platter, spiced nuts, or caramel popcorn.

Pumpkin Spice Martini

Apple picking might signal the start of the season, but pumpkin carving is at the heart of it. But while playing with pumpkins is fun, it’s also hard (and messy) work. Why not treat yourself to a pumpkin spice beverage as a reward? No, not that pumpkin spice drink. We’re talking about something a little classier: a pumpkin spice martini.

Pumpkin Spice Martini
Ingredients
  • 2 oz regular or vanilla vodka
  • 1 oz pumpkin purée
  • 1 oz heavy cream
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice (plus a sprinkle for garnish)
  • Ice
  • Whipped cream

In a cocktail shaker, combine the vodka, pumpkin purée, heavy cream, simple syrup, and pumpkin pie spice. Add ice, and then shake vigorously until cold. Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass, and then top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.

  • Maple magic: For added richness and warmth, swap the simple syrup for maple syrup. Start with ¾ oz and adjust to taste.
  • Gorgeous garnish: Rim the glass with crushed graham cracker or, for post-pour décor, add a cinnamon stick or toasted marshmallows on a skewer.
  • Perfect pairing: Serve with ginger snaps, cheesecake bites, or cinnamon sugar doughnuts.

Maple Bourbon Smash

Maple Bourbon Smash

There’s no prettier sight than trees cloaked in the warm, rich tones of autumn. After an afternoon leaf-peeping, enjoy a cocktail that’s reminiscent of the colorful foliage. A maple bourbon smash perfectly blends the sweetness of maple syrup with the warmth of bourbon, and its warm amber hue is all autumn.

Ingredients
  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1 oz pure maple syrup
  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
  • Fresh mint leaves (6 to 8)
  • Ice
  • Lemon wheel and mint sprig for garnish

In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle the mint leaves and maple syrup, being careful not to tear the leaves too much. Add the bourbon and fresh lemon juice. Fill the shaker with ice and shake, then strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice. Garnish the glass with a lemon wheel and a sprig of mint.

  • Nice spice: Use rye whiskey instead of bourbon for a spicier taste, or try spiced rum for sweetness and warmth.
  • Happy herbals: Muddle fresh thyme or rosemary along with the mint for an herbal twist.
  • Perfect pairing: Serve with a charcuterie board, dark chocolate pretzels, or sweet potato fries.

We’re sure you’ll enjoy these comfy cocktails as much as you enjoy the season. Cheers to a cozy fall!
