Get Your Julep On: A Kentucky Derby Tradition

This year the Kentucky Derby will be held Saturday, May 3 – get ready for the thunder of hooves, elaborate hats and, of course, the Mint Julep. If you're gearing up for a Kentucky Derby party, you're probably already thinking about this iconic cocktail. But what exactly is a Mint Julep, and why is it intertwined with what some call The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports?

Mint Julep

Some say it evolved from medicinal drinks in the Middle East, while others trace it back to early American agriculture. Regardless of its origin, the Julep was a popular drink in the South by the 18th century, often enjoyed as a morning beverage: the alcohol helped ease aches and pains (in a time before aspirin), the sugar provided energy, and the mint awakened and refreshed the senses. It wasn't until the early 20th century that it became linked with the Kentucky Derby, maybe because those who worked in horse racing appreciated this combination of “therapeutic” properties. Or perhaps the Julep's "southern" connection to horse racing was, in part, a matter of proximity to the birthplace of bourbon, combined with a need for a little morning pick-me-up.

The Julep also holds a special place in cocktail history as one of the first popular drinks served with ice. With the rise of ice houses, ice was for the first time a readily available "garnish." Imagine the luxury of a frosty drink in the days before refrigeration!

The beauty of the Mint Julep is simplicity. You only need a few key ingredients:

Fresh Mint
Fresh Mint

This is non-negotiable. Fresh mint is the heart and soul of the Julep. Look for vibrant green leaves with a strong, fragrant aroma.

Sugar
Sugar

Traditionally, simple syrup is used, but some prefer muddling sugar granules directly with the mint.

Water

A splash of water helps dissolve the sugar and meld the flavors.

Crushed Ice

The colder, the better! Crushed ice is essential for that frosty, refreshing experience.

And, of course, the star of the show: Kentucky bourbon.
